Workroom for Arctic Tern Migration

Participants urgently needed in Antarctica, Greenland, Ghana, Chile, Mexico, Northern Canada

The Story: The Arctic Tern flies roundtrip between the Arctic and Antarctica on a yearly migration of nearly 40,000 KM- the longest known annual bird migration. We are tracing this flight path with a series of pathway markers and invite you to join us in imaginaing this most remarkable journey.

The Tern follows two main pathways between the polar ice caps. Birds that breed near Alaska and Canada fly down the western coast of the Americas. Birds from Greenland to Siberia fly down the western coasts of Europe and Africa (see map below). Some of the Europe/African migrants split at the Horn of Africa, cross the Atlantic and fly down the East coast of South America to join the others in Antarctica. Two months later, all retrace their journey back to their various starting points above the Arctic circle.
